Yesterday, FedEx delivered a big box holding everything I’d need to make two dinners. Recipes, ingredients, and giant ice packs to keep it cold on its way to my house. I have been wanting to try Blue Apron, but couldn’t really justify the cost. And then there was a Memorial Day sale for 83% off. I got two meals for $7!!! How do you say no to that??
Last night, I made garlic and soy glazed shrimp with charred broccoli and hot green pepper sauce over jasmine rice. I LOVE that everything is pre-measured! All you have to do is chop the veggies and go for it.
The recipe card is double sided, with all the ingredients on the front with a picture of what it’s supposed to look like (😬), and the instructions (with pictures too!) on the back. I’m not a super fan of how they wanted me to cook this. They said to use the same pan and then just set aside the cooked item. Nope, I don’t want my broccoli to get cold, Blue Apron. I can use multiple pans at a time. Also I cooked my rice in a rice cooker because it’s easier and I bought that thing to use it.
But then this happened…
Don’t be scared, that’s one of the raw shrimps. I am not a fan of tails being left in shrimp 🍤. I think it’s gross and annoying to have those shells on the dinner plate. I also think shrimp need to be deveined on the bottom as well as the top. Blue Apron did take out the vein on top, but not the poop trail on the bottom. So it was a little annoying to have to spend 10-15 minutes making them acceptable. No shrimp poop for me, thanks.
This shrimp dish turned out super yummy! It was spicy, but didn’t overpower the other flavors happening. I would totally make this again, but I wouldn’t be able to do it exactly. The vegetable demi-glaze is a Blue Apron secret recipe. They say restaurants don’t give out recipes for secret sauces, and nor do they.
Tonight I made these chicken and poblano tostadas with roasted zucchini. The tostadas were really good. The zucchini was gross. Like didn’t even make it to my plate, gross. I’m not a huge zucchini fan, so maybe it was just me. I thought maybe I’d like it better roasted, like with brussel sprouts. Nope, perhaps I only really like zucchini when it’s baked in bread with chocolate chips.
Overall, both were good. The shrimp was my fave of the two, though. I think meal kits like these are super convenient and fun. If you’re super busy and struggling at dinner time, I’d recommend Blue Apron or Hello Fresh. Basically because those are the only two I’ve tried. 😉
What food boxes have you tried?
